Finance & operations half year recruitment market update
Both finance and operations functions are driving recruitment activity, with demand high for candidates with Big Four experience or a background in investment banking.
“Since the beginning of 2016, we have witnessed a significant uptick in hiring across both finance and operations disciplines,” said Frederic Tehard, head of finance and business operations recruitment at Robert Walters.
Desirable skill sets
As businesses become more focused on cost and expenditure, there has been a marked increase in requests to hire controllers with a Big Four background as well as previous startup experience.
Demand for candidates with investment banking experience also remains high, both for VP of Finance roles as well as senior business operations positions.
Startups are open to the idea of hiring directly from the investment banking world, but will closely screen the candidate's ability to work in a startup where there are fewer resources.
The on-demand space has tightened its belt and generally is hiring less aggressively, with one or two notable exceptions, but continues to see demand across the SaaS, fin-tech, bio-tech and healthcare spaces.
“With companies starting to pay a lot more attention to their profits and margins, finance and business operations departments are now critical to the success of the business."
Forecast for the second half of 2016
While some believe there may be some functions hiring less over the next six months, without a doubt the startup ecosystem will continue to have strong hiring plans for their finance and business operations departments.
“With companies starting to pay a lot more attention to their profits and margins, finance and business operations departments are now critical to the success of the business, even for companies at the early stages of their development,” adds Frederic Tehard.
