Robert Walters' strategy focuses on building long-term relationships with the companies we partner with. Medium is one such example, with our partnership starting when they were a series A start-up with around 30 people.

They were considering hiring their first Head of Brand Partnerships, but since they were still at an early stage of their development they did not have a clear vision of what background the ideal candidate would have.

Medium is an online publishing platform developed by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams. For writers, Medium offers simple creation tools combined with a larger distribution network. For readers, Medium allows people to follow people and topics that matter to them and receive a personalized feed of content every day. Readers can join in the conversation by highlighting, recommending, or responding to posts.

Building and retaining long term relationships

Given the fact that there was some uncertainty regarding the exact background and level of experience the ideal candidate would have, Medium and Robert Walters agreed to work on the search on an exclusive basis. This allowed the Robert Walters consultants to carry out thorough nationwide market mapping of Medium’s competitors in the online publishing space. By casting the net far and wide, Robert Walters was able to speak to multiple candidates on Medium’s behalf before mutually agreeing the exact profile to target.

After several interviews with candidates in various locations and with differing levels of experience, Robert Walters’ consultants had a very clear understanding of what Medium was looking for and targeted a short-list of candidates for further in-person interviews.

Exclusive Search Project

To ensure the search included highly qualified candidates, Robert Walters headhunted 12+ senior leaders of Sales/Business development from Medium’s competitors in the online media/publishing space. From this shortlist we recommended that Medium hold initial conversations with the five most suitable candidates, then schedule face-to-face meetings with the top three, before moving forward to offer stage with their top choice.

The results

After working on the search for a period of three months, Robert Walters was able to successfully place Medium’s preferred candidate in the role. Due to the successful outcome of this project, Robert Walters embarked on several other high profile searches for Medium and successfully completed the following searches: Head of Finance; four Engineering Leads; Head of Corporate Communication; Data Science Director; and Head of Marketplace Product.
